What to Say When You Forget Someone’s Name

The Universal Embarrassment

You’ve met before. Maybe multiple times. Their name is completely gone. They walk toward you smiling. What do you do?

The Preemptive Introduction Trick

If someone else is with you, introduce the person you’re with first:

“Have you met my colleague Sarah?”

The person whose name you forgot will almost certainly introduce themselves to Sarah, and you’ll have the name without ever admitting you forgot it.

The Direct, Honest Approach

“I’m so sorry — I’ve completely blanked on your name. Please remind me?”

Most people find this endearing rather than offensive. We’ve all been there.

After They Tell You

Use the name immediately in a sentence. Use it again naturally during the conversation. “That’s a really good point, [Name].” This helps it stick and also signals that you actually care now that you’ve recovered it.

Prevention

When you meet someone new, use their name in the first 30 seconds: “Great to meet you, James.” This simple repetition dramatically increases retention.
