What to Say When a Coworker Takes Credit for Your Work

One of the Most Frustrating Workplace Moments

You spent days on a project. Someone presents it as their own in front of leadership. Your face goes hot. What do you do?

In the Moment (If You’re in the Room)

Step in calmly and additively — not confrontationally:

“Building on what [Name] said — I want to add a bit of context from when I was developing this. The key challenge we solved was…”

You’ve inserted yourself into the narrative without making it a scene.

After the Meeting (Direct Conversation)

Pull the person aside privately:

“Hey — I noticed you presented [project] today. I put a lot of work into that and I want to make sure I’m getting visibility on it with leadership. How can we handle attribution going forward?”

Keep it factual and future-focused. You’re not accusing — you’re setting expectations.

If It Keeps Happening

Start creating a paper trail. Send project update emails to your boss directly. Cc yourself on deliverables. Document your contributions in writing before they can be claimed by someone else.
