How to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions Using STAR
What Are Behavioral Interview Questions?
Questions that start with “Tell me about a time when…” or “Give me an example of…” are behavioral questions. They’re asking for evidence of past behavior as a predictor of future performance.
The STAR Method
The perfect answer to any behavioral question uses the STAR framework:
- Situation: Set the context briefly (one or two sentences).
- Task: Explain what your responsibility was.
- Action: Describe specifically what you did — not “we”.
- Result: Share the measurable outcome.
Example: “Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult coworker”
“Our team was on a tight deadline [Situation] and I was responsible for coordinating deliverables [Task]. One team member was consistently missing handoffs. I scheduled a private one-on-one to understand what was blocking them — turned out they were overwhelmed with a side project. We redistributed two tasks [Action], and we delivered the project on time with no further issues [Result].”
Pro Tips
Always quantify results where possible. Always make yourself the active agent. Prepare 5–6 STAR stories before any interview and you’ll have answers for almost anything.
