What to Say When Someone Asks Why You’re Still Single
The Question That Never Gets Easier
Family dinners. Office parties. First dates. The question comes up everywhere: “So why are you still single?” It’s usually well-meaning but it still stings. Here’s how to answer it on your own terms.
The Perfect Answers
For a light, deflecting response:
“I’m holding out for someone who meets my completely reasonable list of 47 requirements.”
For a confident, honest response:
“Honestly, I’ve been focused on building my life in a way I’m proud of. When the right person comes along, great — but I’m not settling just to have an answer for questions like this one.”
For a vulnerable but real response:
“I haven’t found the right person yet. It’s not for lack of trying — it just hasn’t worked out. I’m okay with that.”
The Underlying Message
You don’t owe anyone an explanation for your relationship status. Any answer that comes from a place of confidence — whether funny or sincere — is a perfect answer. The worst thing you can do is apologize for it.
