What to Say in a Thank You Email After a Job Interview

A thank you email after an interview is one of those things almost everyone agrees they should send and not everyone actually does. When done well, it’s a second impression — a chance to reinforce what went well and address anything that didn’t land perfectly.

Send It Within 24 Hours

Same-day or next morning is ideal. By day two, the hiring team has moved on mentally.

The Template That Works

Subject: Thank you — [Your Name] / [Role Title]

“Hi [Name],

Thank you for the time today — I really enjoyed learning more about [specific thing discussed] and hearing about how the team approaches [specific challenge or project].

Our conversation made me more excited about this role. [One sentence reinforcing your strongest fit, ideally connecting to something that came up in the interview].

I look forward to the next steps and please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything else you need from me.

[Your name]”

When Something Went Wrong in the Interview

“One thing I wanted to add to our conversation about [topic] — I mentioned [X], but I think a better example would have been [better example]. Just wanted to make sure I gave you the full picture.”

Keep it brief. One thing, cleanly addressed, then move on.
