How to Turn Down Someone Nicely Who Likes You

Someone makes it clear they like you romantically. You don’t feel the same. You want to be kind without being misleading — and ideally without making every interaction afterwards unbearable.

The Perfect Response

“I’m really flattered, and I think you’re great — but I don’t feel that way romantically. I wouldn’t want to lead you on. I value you as a [friend/colleague/person] though.”

Say it clearly. Say it once. Don’t soften it so much that they think there’s hope when there isn’t.

What Not to Do

Don’t say “maybe later” if you mean never — it’s kinder in the short term but crueler overall. Don’t invent a fictional partner. Don’t disappear without explanation. And don’t apologize excessively — it makes it worse for both of you.

Afterwards

Give them a little space. Don’t pretend it didn’t happen in a way that forces them to either. Let the awkwardness naturally settle. Most of the time, if both people are adults, it does.
