How to Answer: Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years?
Why Interviewers Ask This
They’re not actually asking you to predict the future. They want to know: Are you ambitious? Are you planning to stay? Does your trajectory make sense for this role?
The Perfect Answer
Show ambition while anchoring it to the company’s needs:
“In five years, I’d like to have grown into a senior role where I’m leading projects and mentoring junior team members. I’m drawn to this company specifically because it seems like the kind of place where that path is available to someone who performs.”
What to Avoid
Don’t say “I want your job” — even jokingly. Don’t say “I’d like to start my own company” if you’re interviewing at a startup. Don’t give an answer that makes it obvious you see this job as a pit stop.
If You Genuinely Don’t Know
“Honestly, I’m more focused on becoming excellent at the next role than mapping out a rigid five-year plan. But I do know I want to be in a position where I’ve had real impact and taken on more responsibility than I have today.”
This is honest and still shows drive without over-promising.
