Job Interview: How to Answer Tell Me About Yourself

The Question Everyone Dreads

“Tell me about yourself” is usually the very first thing an interviewer says — and yet it catches most candidates completely off guard. The good news? It has a perfect formula.

The Perfect Answer

Use the Present → Past → Future framework:

  • Present: Briefly describe your current role and what you do day-to-day.
  • Past: Mention one or two relevant experiences or achievements that built your skills.
  • Future: Connect to why you’re excited about this specific role and company.

Example Answer

“I’m currently a customer success manager at a SaaS company, where I manage a portfolio of 50 enterprise clients. Before that, I spent three years in account management where I grew regional revenue by 40%. I’m drawn to this role because I want to move into a leadership position, and your company’s growth trajectory is exactly the environment I thrive in.”

Key Rules

Keep it to 90 seconds. Don’t recite your resume. Don’t mention personal life unless it’s directly relevant. End with a sentence that bridges to why you want the job.
